RFD Connections - August 29, 2025

Captain Tony Todd (E4, A-Shift)

Each month, Hearts on Duty highlights members of the Raleigh Fire Department who go above and beyond in service, leadership, and dedication. These spotlights honor those whose actions inspire their peers and strengthen our fire family.

I am honored to nominate Captain Tony Todd for recognition.

Captain Todd’s story is one of resilience and inspiration. After surviving a nearly fatal on-duty accident, he has returned to the job with the same drive, energy, and passion for excellence that he has always displayed. His presence on the floor is a daily reminder of perseverance in the face of adversity.

Captain Todd not only leads with confidence but actively invests in making everyone around him better — from new recruits learning their way, to seasoned firefighters seeking renewed motivation. His ability to overcome hardship while continuing to serve as a tremendous leader has been uplifting for his crew and for the department as a whole.

๐Ÿ€ RFD Basketball

RFD Basketball was proud to hit the court at Wilmington Fire Department’s Battle of the Badges — an annual charity tournament benefiting Cancer Research.

This year’s event raised an impressive $5,000 while bringing first responders together for some friendly but fierce competition.

After a nail-biter of a matchup, RFD pulled off a hard-earned win against Wilmington PD, showcasing grit, teamwork, and determination. The team then advanced to the championship game, where they battled Wilmington Fire in front of a high-energy crowd. Though RFD came up just short in the final, they left it all on the court and represented our department with heart and hustle.

We’re grateful to Wilmington Fire for hosting such a meaningful event and for the opportunity to be part of the fight for a great cause. Way to go, RFD Basketball — you made us proud!

RFD Connections - August 1, 2025

I am excited to nominate Rescue 16 (C) Senior Firefighters Jason Ceisner and Josh Lull

for their exceptional dedication and initiative during our recent battalion training.

Each B5C company is responsible for developing and delivering training for the battalion annually. Recently, Rescue 16 had planned a bailout training exercise at an acquired structure. However, when a firefighter injury caused the training to be paused, Senior Firefighters Ceisner and Lull quickly adapted and organized a last-minute search drill at the same location.

Both SrFF Ceisner and SrFF Lull went above and beyond in the planning and execution of this drill. They brought in and constructed realistic props—such as bunk beds and a crib—to create a more immersive and effective learning environment. Additionally, they incorporated valuable knowledge from external training sources, such as the firefighter rescue survey, presenting it in a clear and practical manner that significantly enhanced our department’s understanding of critical responsibilities during search.

The quality of this training quickly gained recognition throughout the battalion and extended to other battalions on C shift, leading several other companies to request participation. Rescue 16 has since been running all C shift companies through the drill, with sessions ongoing throughout the day. For example, on this day they successfully conducted drills for S7, E17, L4, and L14, running training from 9 a.m. and are still going (at 4pm).

I am truly impressed and grateful for the entire Rescue 16 C team, and especially for Senior Firefighters Ceisner and Lull. Their passion for their craft and their humble approach to helping others improve are inspiring and invaluable to our department. They were able to teach new firefighters, Captains, and Battalion Chiefs in a way that resulted in a positive learning environment for all.

Dena Ali

Battalion Chief
